JON + JEN - SHAW ISLAND, WA

I met Jon and Jenn while interning at a Monastic farm on a little island in the San Juan Archipelego. These guys ran a farm with some friends of theirs down the street, the only other farm on Shaw besides personal gardens. I really wanted to become their friend, for a few reasons. One, they are young and dropped their lives in the city to become farming hermits who completely depend upon the land for their livelihood; gutsy and amazing. They also grew beautiful veggies and flowers and I wanted to learn from them. And, I must admit, living with seven elderly nuns and a bunch of sheep didn't exactly provide the social engagement I craved being in my 20's. I was lucky to be able to spend time sharing food and laughs with them after long days of us both working at our respective farms

and even luckier to be asked to photograph their upcoming wedding.

Jonathon asked Jenn to marry him on top of a dramatic mossy boulder in the forest above their farm (pictured at left). This was their favorite spot, so they figured why not get married there too?  Jenn's family came down from Alaska (with plenty of moose in tow). And friends and family boarded the ferry to Shaw Island, doubling or maybe even tripleing the population of Shaw for the weekend. Guests walked up a carved out trail through the forest to the highest point on Shaw (the grandmas got carried on a rickshaw) to witness this dynamic pair get hitched. We stood on sheets of moss in the company of Douglas Firs and Hemlocks, grateful to experience the goofy, genuine, commited love that Jon and Jenn shared with us at their ceremony. The reception was held at Shaw Island's community center and consisted of lots of draft beer, moose tacos, vegetable sides prepared with ingredients from the farm, flower arrangements with flowers Jon and Jenn grew themselves,

and a ton of ecstatic and pefectly sloppy dancing.

Thanks, Jon and Jenn for letting me be part of your super fun and unique day and happy life partnership!
